Nadia drove us back to my loft in her car, calling Gerard on the way and reporting what had happened to me. I sat quietly until she ended the call and pulled up in front of my apartment building. I would have to go pick up my bike from Pilsen in the Lower West Side later that evening.

“Not too happy, I take it,” I noted wryly. It wasn’t hard to hear Gerard’s booming voice as he yelled into the phone.

Nadia shook her head. “Not at all. He reached out to Claudia yesterday and they were working on a deal. He’s fuming at her flagrant disrespect of the rules.”

“What do you think is going to happen now?”

Nadia shrugged. “If they don’t stop, it’ll be a call to war. There’s only so much Gerard is willing to put up with.”

I nodded and tilted my head appraisingly. “Hey … how did you know to come rescue me?”

She turned to face me. “I highly doubted you were hanging out at the Chicago coven’s house. And if you were, I’m sorry I interrupted your fun.”

“Oh yeah, I was having a blast.” I looked down at my bare forearm that was completely healed. Unfortunately, the pain was still fresh in my mind. My mother really had prepared me for everything. Almost as if she predicted this would happen. “Well, thanks for the save, Nadia.” I opened the car door. “Hopefully you won’t have to save me again anytime soon.”

“That won’t be a problem since I’m back to being your Shadow,” she said. “I’ll be watching your every move from now on.”

I groaned. “Really? Geez, Gerard sure knows how to panic.”

She grinned. “He’s merely taking precautions to protect his Pack. There’s a difference.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I exited the car and walked into the lobby, stopping at the elevators and pressing the up button with a sigh. The doors opened with a soft ping and I stepped inside and entered my code. Within seconds, I stepped out of the elevator and entered my apartment.

Christian was waiting for me. He exhaled loudly when the elevator doors opened. “Thank God,” he sighed as he strode toward me.

I ran a hand through my tangled hair. “Don’t thank God, thank Nadia.”

“Are you hurt?” Christian looked me over and spun me around to check for visible injuries.

“My sweater got the worst of it,” I lied as I showed him my ripped sleeve.

“I swear, Claudia is going to pay for this,” he growled as he stormed toward my wall. I knew before he moved what he was planning to do. I hurried to his side to prevent his fist from slamming into my wall.

“Easy there, champ.” I gripped his fist. “You know I’ll have to pay for any damages in this apartment when I move out, right? And if you haven’t noticed, I’m unemployed at the moment, so … I can’t afford it much longer.”

He deflated. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“Damn right I’m right,” I chuckled. “And you know you don’t have to continue staying here. I’ll be fine on my own.
